If you’re dreaming of an off-road adventure that combines waves, culture, and wild scenery, Sumba is the place. A dirt bike trip across the island lets you experience it all: surf beaches in the west, cultural villages in the south, and endless savannah in the east — all without riding the same road twice.
Here’s a sample 6-day route that crosses the island west to east.
Pick up your bike in Tambolaka and ride straight to the coast. The route is short but beautiful — the perfect start to your trip.
Head south, cutting through the hills. You’ll pass tiny villages, rice fields, and end up on the wide beach of Marosi — perfect for a swim or surf.
This is a cultural highlight. Ratenggaro village is famous for its tall thatched houses and ancient tombs. The ride there mixes dirt, sand, and coastal tracks.
Head inland toward Waikabubak. The ride takes you through open savannah with herds of horses and buffalo. This area is less touristy — a true glimpse of local Sumba life.
This is the big crossing day. The landscape shifts from green hills to the golden savannah of East Sumba. Stop at the Wairinding Hills viewpoint before descending into Waingapu.
Unlike shorter loops, this west-to-east route never doubles back. Each day brings you to new landscapes — from palm-lined surf beaches to wide-open savannah. By the end, you’ve crossed the entire island, seen its cultural treasures, and surfed its most famous breaks.
It’s the ultimate Sumba dirt bike adventure.
