Multi-Day Dirt Bike Trip Across Sumba

If you’re dreaming of an off-road adventure that combines waves, culture, and wild scenery, Sumba is the place. A dirt bike trip across the island lets you experience it all: surf beaches in the west, cultural villages in the south, and endless savannah in the east — all without riding the same road twice.

Here’s a sample 6-day route that crosses the island west to east.

Day 1 – Arrival Tambolaka → Kerewei (West Sumba)

  • Ride: Easy coastal and village roads
  • Highlights: First surf at Kerewei Beach, relaxed coastal vibes
  • Overnight: Surf lodge near Kerewei

Pick up your bike in Tambolaka and ride straight to the coast. The route is short but beautiful — the perfect start to your trip.

Day 2 – Kerewei → Wanokaka → Lamboya

  • Ride: Dirt and gravel through hills and valleys
  • Highlights: Rice terraces, rolling hills, Marosi Beach sunset
  • Overnight: Guesthouse by Marosi or Lamboya

Head south, cutting through the hills. You’ll pass tiny villages, rice fields, and end up on the wide beach of Marosi — perfect for a swim or surf.

Day 3 – Lamboya → Kodi & Ratenggaro (Southwest Sumba)

  • Ride: Coastal and sand tracks
  • Highlights: Megalithic tombs, traditional houses, wild beaches
  • Overnight: Simple beach stay in Kodi

This is a cultural highlight. Ratenggaro village is famous for its tall thatched houses and ancient tombs. The ride there mixes dirt, sand, and coastal tracks.

Day 4 – Kodi → Waikabubak → Lawonda / Waikelo (Central Sumba)

  • Ride: Inland savannah roads and dirt tracks
  • Highlights: Open grasslands, rural life, traditional markets in Waikabubak
  • Overnight: Eco-lodge in central Sumba

Head inland toward Waikabubak. The ride takes you through open savannah with herds of horses and buffalo. This area is less touristy — a true glimpse of local Sumba life.

Day 5 – Central Sumba → Waingapu (East Sumba)

  • Ride: Long but scenic route, mostly savannah and rolling hills
  • Highlights: Wide open trails, Wairinding Hills, panoramic views
  • Overnight: Guesthouse in Waingapu

This is the big crossing day. The landscape shifts from green hills to the golden savannah of East Sumba. Stop at the Wairinding Hills viewpoint before descending into Waingapu.

Day 6 – Waingapu → Pantai Walakiri (East Coast Finish)

  • Ride: Short final ride
  • Highlights: Iconic mangrove sunset at Walakiri Beach
  • Overnight: Waingapu (or prepare for departure)
